Tablers pitch on for beach clean-up

The local tides and currents also deposited all the garbage onto Toti's public beaches.

Amanzimtoti Round Table 85 Pipeliners rolled up their sleeves and heeded the call to clean up Toti’s beaches on Saturday, 14 May.

Toti was hit with heavy rains on the weekend of 7 and 8 May, which resulted in flooding throughout most of KZN. These floods breached the rivers, causing them to flow at full force towards the sea. As a result, the rivers dragged a sea of garbage down to the mouths and into the ocean.

The local tides and currents also deposited all the garbage onto Toti’s public beaches. Beaches were strewn with plastic bottles, wrappers, needles and all sorts of unsavoury items, necessitating the municipality to close all swimming beaches until the rubbish was cleaned up.

Ward 97 councillor and local environmentalists sent out pleas in last week’s Sun and on social media for volunteers to assist with a weekend clean-up.

“Toti Pipeliners and some of their family members jumped at the opportunity and met on the beach in the morning to assist local municipal workers clean the beaches,” said Amanzimtoti Round Table president, Vincent Tutt. “Well done to our Pipeliners in taking this on. This truly shows the calibre of Tabler you will make.”
