Backline paddle-out to salute Brendan

Brendan was always in the water at Winklespruit.

Toti teenager Brendan Fibiger (20) was honoured with a paddle-out at Winkle beach after his funeral on Wednesday, 20 April.

Brendan was always in the water at Winklespruit where he was a lifeguard and represented the Central KZN Bodyboarding Association in the boys division.

He died on Friday, 15 April and members of Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club, Kuswag Skool where he matriculated, Varsity College where he was studying network engineering, and the sports teams he represented did a paddle-out to bid him farewell.

“It was such an amazing experience,” said his mother Gerda. “Brendan was always involved in lifesaving, but he only did his test a few weeks ago. To see over 750 people at his funeral and 150 take to the water, was incredible. The whole Toti community stood together.”

Brendan was born in Kempton Park, but moved to Toti eight years ago. He was also a prolific cricketer and represented the Toti first team for the last two seasons.

He also liked beatboxing and he reached the finals of the East Coast’s Got Talent competition twice. The music in his car could be heard before he came around the corner.

“Brendan lived his life to the fullest, he had a joy for life and he always gave his best,” said Gerda. “His heaven on earth was ‘backline’ in the sea and he said that was where he talked to God.

Our greatest thanks to Winkle Lifesaving Club for their help and support for the paddle-out.”
