Owner mystified as 12 cats go missing

When I noticed the pattern, I figured something was not right.

Twelve cats have gone missing from the same property in Bernadotte Street in just over two months.

The tenant, who only wants to be named as A Pretorius, lives in a granny flat on the property and rescues cats privately at her own expense.

“My door faces Bernadotte Street, but the main house faces Lewis Drive,” she said. “It seems the cats have gone missing from Lewis Drive.

I’ve lived here for four years and I’ve never had a problem with the cats. On occasion one or two cats have roamed for more than a day, but have always returned. On Friday, 5 February the first cat went missing while I was away.”

Since then a total of 12 have gone missing, with three to four disappearing a weekend.

“It’s mostly over a weekend that they go missing. Three went missing during weekdays.

When they first went missing, I thought they would come back. When I noticed the pattern, I figured something was not right.”

One of her cats went missing on 27 January, but returned, however it was sporting a badly swollen eye. “I didn’t think anything of it, but when the swelling went down, I saw that he had lost an eye from a pellet gun.”

The cat lover suspects one of her neighbours is possibly shooting her rescued cats, but has no evidence to lodge a case with the SPCA. Missing cat posters have also been ripped off lamp posts.
