Moth lauded for seven decades of service

He was a founding member of Amanzimtoti Rotary Club.

Denis Couzens was presented with an award for 70 years of unbroken service to the Moths at a function at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club on Friday, 8 April.

The feat is an especially notable record as his service was at the same shellhole.

The shellhole was originally named Picardy, but was renamed Picardy Bazooka.

Denis served as Old Bill for a total of 15 years – in 1974, from 1978 to 1987, and 2000 to 2003.

He was born and did his schooling in Pietermaritzburg. In 1940 he joined the National Voluteers Brigade and South African Coastal Defense. He was a member of the Durban Light Infantry Brigade and was stationed in Egypt and Italy, where he saw action during World War 1.

Denis moved to Toti in 1945 after the war and married Ruth in 1947. They have three children, Pamela, Noel and David.

He was a founding member of Amanzimtoti Rotary Club, where he was a member for four years.

He is now a resident at Mooi Hawens.

“I’ve enjoyed my Mothdome. I enjoyed all the work we did and I’m proud to be associated with the Moths for so long,” said Denis.
