We stand informed that the Safer Cities department is no longer considering relocating vagrants, homeless or drug dealers from the inner city to the lower Illovo area.

The City however remained adamant that the southern wards carry some of the burden and following negotiations which the Health department: Vector control unit, it was decided to rather release several hundred rats that were collected throughout the city into the sugarcane fields east of Winklespruit.

Asked for comment, Cllr Andre Beetge said:”We find ourselves in a fortunate position to assist the city. Given the choice – vagrants or rats – the decision was really an easy one as given the vast open fields around the area, their integration into the local rodent population should go largely unnoticed”
