NEWS JUST IN: Shock finding in tainted tap water saga

Water sample analysis identifies the source of the contamination

AMANZIMTOTI may have been named the ‘place of sweet water’ by King Shaka Zulu himself, but he couldn’t have imagined that the sweet waters of this town were to become tainted with another popular drink that is enjoyed by the Queen of England herself.

In a surprise finding yesterday by the city-led team which has been probing the contamination and discolouration of Toti’s water sources for the last week, ward 97’s Cllr Andre Beetge announced that our tap water has been tainted by tea leaves.

As reported in this week’s South Coast Sun, residents complained last week about discoloured water running from their taps. The city’s team probed the reservoirs and flushed the contaminated water through its fire hydrants. More importantly, samples taken from the various outlets, reservoirs and the water treatment works were analysed and the results show that the contaminant was actually tea leaves. “We’re now setting about finding where the leaves could have entered the system,” said Cllr Beetge.

“This should calm residents to some degree, as there was much consternation about the issue. Now that the issue has been settled, it may be a good idea for residents to kick back, boil their tap water and simply add milk and sugar – at least they won’t need to fork out extra for teabags during these tough economic times,” added Beetge.
