Home needs help with ward revamps

We would like to raise awareness of our frail care centre and dementia ward.

Mooihawens request assistance from the Toti public to continue with a refurbishment of its frail care centre and dementia ward.

“We did fundraise last year, but unfortunately it didn’t go so well,” said social worker, Heilie van der Merwe.

“We would like to raise awareness of our frail care centre and dementia ward.”

Many people can’t afford the centre’s services and the wards are in need of various items to brighten up residents’ lives.

“We need linen, clothing, toiletries and things to make the wards pretty, such as pictures, picture frames and old teapots, which we use as vases. We would also like big screen TVs, as we run photos continuously which the residents enjoy.

We are in the process of re-painting D floor. We would also like to re-tile, as the existing tiles have been here for about 40 years.

We are moving away from cot beds to traditional beds. We allow residents to bring their own beds, but that is not always possible in frail care.”

Part of the frail care centre has been re-tiled and re-done and is looking splendid.

Opened in 1971, Mooi Hawens is a safe haven for the elderly. It consists of a home for the elderly, the Lena de Klerk frail care centre and dementia ward, and Tabor flats.

“We have recently changed from an institutionalised place to person centred care, where residents are made comfortable, cared for and loved,” said Heilie. “We are very excited about the changes and all the staff are currently getting trained in the new way to provide a safe haven for people at Mooihawens.

We have also started home care, where an umemployed person is trained for a year as a caregiver. They receive a certificate and are placed in the community, where they work under supervision.

“We have a saying that the residents don’t live in our work place, but we work in their homes.”
