Mike to pound the pavement for Hospice

Anyone wanting to run Comrades for Hospice, contact Neil McDonald on 083-597-8985.

An Umkomaas runner has pledged to run this year’s Comrades Marathon in aid of Khanya Hospice and challenges other runners to do likewise.

Mike Parasaramen of Umkomaas Athletics Club came ‘running’ to the CEO of Khanya Hospice, Neil McDonald to bring him the good news that he wants to run the annual ultramarathon on 29 May as a fundraiser for the NPO.

“Mike challenges other athletes and club members to come forward and also offer support to this Hospice,” said Neil. Anyone wanting to run Comrades for Hospice, contact Neil McDonald on 083-597-8985.

Hospice offers free palliative nursing care to people with life-threatening diseases and support to their families.

“We are not government-funded and have to arrange our own events and fundraising.

Mike, a man with a ‘heart for the people’, knows the good and humble work that the Hospice nursing staff do in the area. He is also aware that the number of patients seen by our staff has increased in the past year.

People contact us and come onto the Hospice programme at a very late stage of the disease. People must understand that we care for the living. We are trained to do pain and symptom control.”

Once diagnosed, people should contact Hospice on 039-973-1782/0277 or email hospice@scottnet.co.za.
