Parents rescue life skills training from welfare

The programme was funded by AECI.

KINGSBURGH Child and Welfare hosted a life skills positive parenting programme at its offices in Hall Road from Tuesday, 22 March to Thursday, 25 March.

The programme was funded by AECI.

“Being a parent is always challenging. It is often an extremely difficult task to fulfil,” said senior social worker, Sandra Govender.

“We did not run this programme to create perfect parents, but to help parents replace the perhaps less helpful things they say and do with more helpful and effective things.”

The training was conducted in a participating manner, to facilitate learning and sharing of ideas.

Topics covered included challenges parents face such as discipline, defiance of authority, respect, trust, parental roles and communication.

Day one’s sessions covered understanding behaviour, listening to children’s feelings, and responding to children’s negative feelings, followed by building children’s self-esteem, expressing parental needs and feelings, and discipline and being assertive on day two.

The programme was concluded on day three with discipline and problem solving, values and family meetings, and putting it all together.
