Drink spiking drives anti-drugs mass ride

The reason we started this initiative is due to the large number of drinks being spiked.

The Against Substance Abuse campaign held a mass ride through Amanzimtoti on Friday, 18 March, together with Amanzimtoti SAPS, Community Policing Forum and Bikers Against Drugs.

Five local establishments were visited by the group who handed over a letter stating that they need to ensure no underage drinking takes place as well as the use or selling of drugs on their premises is not allowed.

“There was no negativity from the establishments when they received their letters and they are all on board to ensure the safety of our youth,” said the campaign’s Bianca Holman.

“The reason we started this initiative is due to the large number of drinks being spiked, as well as underage youth drinking and using drugs. We, as a community, have to stand together to show we do not tolerate this behaviour.

The work needs to come from the community’s side, as well as parents to ensure that the youth of Amanzimtoti are not getting involved in such activities.

Today’s social standards make it ‘okay’ for the youth to be involved in the wrong things, and only we can change this.

The youth of Amanzimtoti are the future. If we allow such behaviour to get out of control, what will become of our town?”

Bianca said it is time the community stands together and reports any illegal activity. “Don’t allow your underage child to frequent clubs or adult environments. Let them be children and enjoy their youth in a safe way.

This will not be the last initiative of the campaign, as we will be doing things like this on a regular basis.”
