A Metro Police canine officer had a narrow escape on Monday afternoon, 14 March when a fleeing robber attempted to stab him.
The Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) received a call about an attempted break-in in Bhengu Road.
“Unfortunately the suspect fled, but a guard was stationed to hold observation,” said CCPO operations manager, Leon Joone.
When the robber returned at about 3.30pm to attempt to break in a second time, Metro Police inspectors, Norman Paine and Heath Morison responded with canine officer Jet.
“The dog picked up the spore and tracked the suspect into dense bush. The suspect tried to stab Jet, but fortunately he was not injured.”
The wily thief jumped over a wall and made his escape for the second time, despite a long search for him by Metro Police, the CCPO, ET Rapid Response and Blue Security officers.
“It was a narrow escape for Jet and we are thankful he wasn’t injured,” said Joone. “These police dogs put their lives on the line for their handlers.
Fortunately we also prevented a housebreaking.”
