CBD vagrant removal linked to new bylaw policing?

Metro Police remove suspected whoonga addicts

A trio of vagrants or suspected whoonga addicts have been removed from Toti CBD by Metro Police this morning (Friday, 11 March), in an incident locals hope is related to the implementation of the new Ethekwini Municipality bylaws.

Local paramedic Leo Fourie shared a photo of the trio on social media, showing the three fast asleep in an alcove next to the old public toilets on the southern end of the old CBD buildings.

He said ”2 Ladies of ‘the night’ and their Pimp were just removed from the old toti mall area now. Thanks to the Saps Motorcycle Unit for the assistance” Leo also says he has heard people living in flats in the area say there are problems with the prostitutes 24/7. At night people are picking them up and dropping them off there.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an employee of one of the businesses that operate at the CBD said vagrancy and prostitution was a major concern for those working in the vicinity as well as customers who frequent the stores. The soup kitchen, which feeds dozens of homeless people on Saturday mornings was not sited in the correct area either, said the source, as it attracted the vagrants to the area.

Metro Police could not be reached for comment to clarify where the trio were moved to.
