Broken water pipe leaks for three months

We were all get told by the municipality to cut back 15% on our usage, yet the municipality has allowed the wastage of so much water in this instance.

KwaMakuhtha residents are upset that the municipality has allowed a broken water pipe to flow since November without repair, especially in light of water restrictions imposed on residents during the drought.

Matthew Wearne said his staff members reported the burst pipe, which is located on Sundwini Road near Maphi Tavern, to the municipality, but three months later nothing has been done about it.

“Five of my staff members who live and walk down that road came to me on two separate occasions to ask if I could sort out the damaged water pipe by taking it further,” said Matthew.

“Alfos Lata, one of my employees, said he phoned in November and again in December to report the problem to the council from my offices. I asked him if they gave him a reference number. He said he asked them for one, but was told it is not his property so he does not need one.”

Residents think a grader that was used to grade the road surface in November damaged the pipe.

“We were all get told by the municipality to cut back 15% on our usage, as there is a water crisis on the go, yet the municipality has allowed the wastage of so much water in this instance. Why should we cut back if this is their attitude?,” asked Matthew.

The Sun contacted eThekwini Municipality on Tuesday, 1 March, but there was no response at the time of going to print.
