Shave, spray in solidarity with cancer survivors

Participants pay R50 to take part, while children under the age of 12 only pay R25.

It’s that time of the year again when Cansa calls on you to show your support in solidarity with cancer survivors.

The annual Cansa Shavathon takes place at Galleria, Seadoone Mall and Makro in Toti on 27 and 28 February and Cansa wants you to show you care by either shaving or spraying your hair.

Participants pay R50 to take part, while children under the age of 12 only pay R25.

Lords and Legends hosts a Shavathon on its veranda on Friday, 26 February from 6pm.

At Seadoone Mall, play your part on Saturday from 8am to 2pm in front of Clicks. “We encourage Amanzimtoti High School pupils to join in there,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

At Galleria Mall the table will be set up to serve the first victims from 9am until 4pm in front of Bidvest Bank (halfway between Game and Mugg and Bean). “There we encourage Kingsway High School and Kuswag Skool pupils to join in, possibly after 1pm and morning sport commitments,” said Cllr Beetge.

A fourth venue will operate at Makro from 9am until 2pm.

Those participating in the Khanya Hospice fundraiser raft race on Saturday at Umkomaas Ski-Boat Club can do their part at a special shave and colour table.

On Sunday the Shavathon is back at Galleria from 9am to 1pm.

Workplaces, companies and organisations can also get involved by hosting a Shavathon event from 29 February to 4 March.

“This offers an opportunity for employees and employers to reflect on how they have been touched by cancer and to encourage colleagues, as some may currently even be fighting the disease or in remission,” said Cansa’s Robyn Briggs. To register, email rbriggs@cansa.org.za.

Funds raised at Shavathon events help Cansa continue its care and support programmes to those affected by cancer, help provide educational materials with information on how to reduce cancer risk, as well as help provide access to early detection and cancer via cancer screening programmes.
