Breaking news: Water restrictions imposed across city

Fines of R500 for domestic consumers and R10,000 for large businesses for those who do not comply.

Water restrictions with immediate effect were approved by a majority during a sitting of the eThekwini Council on Wednesday, 24 February.

In terms of the decision, both domestic and industrial use has to be reduced by 15% and irrigation by 50% of the annual target draft.

Consumers who do not comply with water restrictions will, following a written warning, be issued with a fine in accordance with clause 11(1)(b) of the eThekwini water bylaws, which is R500 for domestic consumers and R10,000 for large businesses.

“In light of the extreme drought across the entire country, residents are cautioned to reduce their daily usage, as well as being vigilant regarding any possible water leaks,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

Report water leaks to the municipal call centre on 080-131-3013 and obtain a reference number for follow-up purposes.
