The body of a man was found by a passerby in the bush next to Kynoch Road in Umbogintwini on Saturday, 6 February.
“The deceased was found lying face down and only dressed in briefs, which were partially pulled down,” said Toti SAPS communication officer, Capt Charlene van der Spuy.
“It appeared as if the deceased was assaulted elsewhere and the body dumped, as there were no signs of a struggle or that the assault took place at the scene.
The motive for the assault, which could have resulted in the death of the deceased, is unknown at this stage.”
A case of murder is being investigated by Amanzimtoti SAPS.
The body was taken to the Gale Street mortuary for a post mortem examination to establish cause of death.
“The community is urged to come forward with any information to assist with the investigation and identifying of the deceased,” said Capt Van Der Spuy.
