Burglary gang’s reign of terror halted

Both Meji and Mtolo appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate's Court on Monday, 25 January.

A gang of three robbers who had been terrorising Pennington and Scottburgh have been taken off the streets.

Thabiso Moya (22) was linked to a housebreaking in Gumtree Road on 7 January, house robberies in Cherry Lane on 14 January and Sardine Drive on 21 December where the complainant was stabbed, and in Beefwood Road on 29 December.

While still on the run from police, he was shot and killed by members of a rival gang in the Eastern Cape.

Siyabonga Meji (25) was linked to a house robbery in Pennington Drive on 7 January where three men, one armed with a gun, robbed the occupants of their cellphones and drove off with their Hyundai IX35. The complainant was assaulted with the butt of the gun.

All the family’s possessions were packed in the vehicle, including their clothing, laptops and other valuables.

Meji was also linked to another house robbery at a senior citizens home in Beefwood Road on 14 January.

He was arrested by members of the Port Shepstone Vehicle Identification Section (VIS) in the Eastern Cape on Thursday, 21 January.

A notorious convicted criminal, Ayanda ‘Boi-Boi’ Mtolo (31) who had at least four warrants of arrest outstanding, managed to evade arrest until he was spotted by a gardener trying to break into a house in Shad Road on Friday, 22 January.

The alert gardener and his four friends chased Mtolo into marshy land in Figtree Road, where he took cover in the bushes. After being surrounded by members of the sector forum and community, he gave himself up.

“He has been linked to the house robberies in Pennington Drive, the senior citizens’ home in Beefwood Road, another Beefwood Road house robbery, as well as at least four cases of housebreaking going back as far as October 2005,” said Major Thulani Zwane of the SAPS KZN media centre.

Both Meji and Mtolo appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 January and were remanded back into police custody until 3 February for their bail application hearings. “Mtolo was one of Scottburgh SAPS’ most wanted suspects and management conveys thanks and appreciation to the gardener and his friends, members of the Pennington Sector Forum and community members who played a part in securing his arrest,” said provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
