Sun bids farewell to assistant editor

The Sun wishes her well in her future endeavours and travels.

THIS week the Sun bids farewell to its stalwart assistant editor, Jenny Bipat who is leaving to teach English in China.

Jenny joined the paper in 1999, having transferred from the Ladysmith Gazette where she first cut her teeth in community journalism since 1997.

She won the coveted prize for best hard news photo of the year at the annual Caxton Awards that same year, for a series of photographs she took of a search for the bodies of children who had been washed away when the Klip River flooded.
“Jenny applied the same passion and drive that won her the award during her time at the Sun, and the Upper South Coast has been enriched by her dogged approach to the issues she tackled, especially in highlighting injustices and in pushing for authorities to do right by ratepayers,” said managing editor, MichellĂ© Izatt.

In 2006, Jenny was promoted to the position of assistant editor, where she has excelled in leading the team during the editor’s absence and guiding and mentoring incoming journalists. “Jenny was instrumental in the Sun Newspapers’ many successes during her tenure and she has made an invaluable contribution during her time at the Sun. Her stand-out work ethic sets her apart and her input as a valued member of staff will be missed.”

Excited, and a little nervous for the major change in direction, Jenny explained: “I’ve decided to seek out this new challenge to take myself out of my comfort zone, so it will be interesting to see where it leads.
It’s a completely new beginning. I will miss all my contacts in the community and my colleagues.”

The Sun wishes her well in her future endeavours and travels.
