Gunmen ransack home, steal cars from family

They tied up the family including two small children.

GUN-toting robbers held-up a family of five, including two young children, at their Dan Pienaar Drive, Toti home on Tuesday evening, 19 January.

The incident happened at about 9pm, as the home owner was busy with laundry.

“The back door was open and I sat down in the living room with my four-year-old son. Two men walked in, one armed with a gun and the other with a knife,” said the traumatised home owner.

They picked up her phone and asked if there was anyone else in the house. “I told them my husband was in the bathroom. They took my son and I to the bathroom and told us to lie down. My daughter (6) who was asleep and my mother-in-law who was in the flat were also brought down and forced to lie on the floor.”

By now five men were in the house, of whom two were armed with guns.

“It happened so quickly, you can’t fight or talk back.”

“Our hands and feet were tied and my husband’s hands were bound with a toy handcuff which locks. The robbers asked for TVs, laptops and gold jewellery.”
The robbers helped themselves to four cellphones, two flat screen TVs, a laptop, wallets, jewellery, a DVD player with surround sound and meat from the freezer.

They also drove off in the owners vehicles, a bakkie and a car. “They had trouble starting my car, came back and took my husband to help them.”
After they left, the owners managed to untie each other and ran outside to get help from a neighbour, who cut off the handcuffs.

The robbers entered the property by jumping over the boundary wall of the house next door, which is empty.
Patrolling police noticed the commotion and gave chase. The robbers abandoned the car, which they bumped, but the bakkie has not been recovered as yet.

“It happened so quickly, you can’t fight or talk back.”

In a second, unrelated incident, two vehicles were stolen from a secure complex in Adelaide Road in Doonside in the early hours of Wednesday, 20 January.
Thieves entered through a bathroom window, took two sets of keys and drove out of the gated complex.
