[PHOTOS] Fish kill in little Toti River

A variety of fish species were found floating in the water.

A LARGE number of dead fish were found floating in the Little Amanzimtoti River, near the Warnadoone Skiboat Club on Friday, 4 December.

A regular beachgoer, Lynett Snyman noticed the dead fish at about 7am, many of which she pulled out from the water.

The river also boasts prolific bird life. “I removed about 50 fish comprising mullet, tilapia, grunter and kitefish. They weighed about 500g each,” said an upset Lynett.

The cause of the fish kill is believed to be the result of lack of oxygen due to high sewage content in the water.

Lynett took a water sample which will be analysed by an university.

The Sun sent a query regarding the fish kill to eThekwini Municipality, but no response was forthcoming at the time of going to press on Wednesday, 9 December.
