Upliftment project sews up uniforms for needy pupils

Needy pupils received school uniforms.

THIRTY-FOUR needy pupils of Bhekulwandle Primary School received new school uniforms made by members of the Bhekulwandle Community Upliftment Project on Friday, 20 November.

“We chose children, mostly orphans, whose uniforms were in poor condition,” said project co-ordinator, Msizi Cwiliwe.

The project is based at the school and also offers classes in baking, cooking and gardening. It came to fruition after principal, ET Hlela applied for funding from Lotto for community upliftment in the area. Once funding was secured, a hall was renovated to house the project.

The sewing programme has been successfully embraced by both women and men in the community. Recently 16 people completed a six-month course and have become adept in pattern and dress-making.

The group has been busy making men’s wear and school uniforms.

“We want to start co-operatives, so the graduates will be able to start their own little businesses. We are also looking at approaching other schools to sew their uniforms,” said sewing co-ordinator, Nompumelelo Mngadi.
