Thanks for support in time of need

It is heartwarming to know that this community would band together and assist me one way or the other

EDITOR – I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the local residents who sent get well messages, or came to visit me while I was recovering in hospital and at home.

I would also like to thank everyone who contributed to the fund that was set up by the hard-working Sapphire Coast committee.

Glynis Rathbone, Craig Chamier, Gayleen and Lords and Legends all played big parts in organising the award evening and their efforts are appreciated. The fund generated a substantial amount of money that will help me with regard to costs that are not covered by my hospital plan.

I have just had more surgery on my eye, and will require further surgery on my jaw and eye in the near future, but hopefully the end is in sight (pardon the pun). The cast that has been on my leg for nine weeks is now off and I have managed to drive for the first time since the accident. I have often wondered what would happen if I had to be seriously injured during an incident.

Read about George Snodey’s terrible motor vehicle accident here.

Would the local community assist me or would they have the normally accepted mentality of ‘it’s not our problem’. Well after this incident it is heartwarming to know that this community would band together and assist me one way or the other. I have been stabbed, shot at and hit by a vehicle while trying to keep criminals at bay, but this has not deterred me.

People like myself react spontaneously whether danger lurks or not and whether people will assist when we’re in trouble or not. Like I said, it is very comforting to know that the local community does care.
I would also like to publicly thank my good friend Elaine Woodhouse, who basically ran my life for me while I was man down, from minister of finance to taxi driver. To my buddies from Toti third rugby side and their wives, thank you for ensuring I was well fed at all times when I returned home.

To my friends Rory and Janos from the Illovo Beach second hand shop, who ran around from pillar to post picking up furniture for me that I had bought over the phone, at no cost and last but not least to you, Michelle, the editor for all your coverage you have afforded this incident, keeping everybody in the loop with all the reports.

Thank you one and all – it is most comforting to see how many people cared and reacted during my time of need.
