Shoppers cautioned about pickpockets

She just thought the woman was ill-mannered, not realising she was being robbed.

A Doonheights resident warns Toti shoppers to be on the look-out for pickpockets this festive season.

The woman, who did not wish to be named, said she was robbed of her purse while shopping at a Doonside mall on Friday, 6 November.

“I saw a man and woman in the aisle by the detergents,” she said. “When I went to pick up some soap, the woman pushed me. I just thought she was being rude. She was very aggressive and we were all alone in the aisle.”

The woman bumped into her a second time, but she just thought the woman was ill-mannered, not realising she was being robbed.

It was only while at the till to pay for her purchases that she realised her purse, containing her petrol, debit and credit cards, driver’s license and R700 in cash, was missing from her bag.

On Sunday she received a call to say her purse had been found outside a Toti mall. “Only my expired cards were left in it,” she said. Someone used her identity document to access her bank statements in Johanesburg and her petrol and debit cards have since been used.
