USCATA offers integrated bridge solution to N2 interchange

Interested parties are invited to register their concerns

CHAIRMAN of the Upper South Coast Anti-Toll Alliance, Ted Holden stresses that individual residents must register their interest in the proposed N2 Adams Road interchange upgrade before Monday, 9 November.

The consultants acting for roads authority, SANRAL has given this deadline for the registration of interested and affected parties.

“We can’t rely on SANRAL or government to speak for us – the people need to be heard on what it is we want,” said Holden.

“This issue is not about being anti-toll or anti-development, it’s about looking holistically at the future of the Upper South Coast and planning accordingly.”

Holden has suggested an alternative – an integrated rail and road elevated bridge solution which spans from the Virgin Active gym building to the Doonside off-ramp in the south. He says he took inspiration from his travels to Perth, where road, rail, park and ride facilities as well as ancillary pipelines are integrated in a vertical fashion. “The 1,5km distance and topography between these two points would allow for such a solution, and would negate the construction of the proposed Lewis-Grant Road bridge across the N2.

He said while this is simply a suggestion, it also highlights that other possibilities should be considered. “The Upper South Coast will be subject to, among others, the dig out port plan in the next decade or so. Such a strategic project will require forward thinking from our planners, not piecemeal solutions that are only fit for now.”
