Car guard thwarts would-be car thieves

It is believed the two thieves are part of a syndicate.

Two car guards apprehended two would-be car thieves at Arbour Crossing on Thursday afternoon, 29 October.

According to Galleria marketing manager, Anusha Timul, it is believed the two thieves are part of a syndicate.

“To protect the car guards, we are not disclosing their names,” she said. “The guards recognised the thieves from previous visits to the centre.

A remote jamming detector went off at about 1pm, which aroused their suspicion. One of the car guards also noticed the thieves eavesdropping on his two-way radio communication.

When the car guard realised the thieves were trying to get away after their attempt to steal a Toyota Fortuner failed, he jumped into their getaway car through the driver’s window to prevent them from driving off.

A scuffle ensued inside the car and one of the thieves tried to stab the car guard, but he prevailed and apprehended his attacker.

The other thief tried to run away, but he was caught by another car guard,” said Anusha.

The thieves were handed over to Toti SAPS when they arrived, with an iPad and cellphone they had managed to steal from the Fortuner.
