Motorist dies on N2

A truck collided into the rear of the bakkie that was travelling southbound on the N2, before driving away.

One man was killed and two others injured, one critically after a bakkie struck the Umdoni Road bridge on Wednesday morning, 28 October.

Reports from an eyewitness indicate that a truck collided into the rear of the bakkie that was travelling southbound on the N2, before driving away.

The bakkie with three occupants then veered off the road, ramped about 10 metres up the underside of the bridge and slammed into a concrete support post.

“Netcare 911 paramedics found accident debris spread over about 50 metres of the highway with the injured still trapped in the wreckage,” said Netcare 911 media liasion, Chris Botha.

“After triaging the patients, it was found that the driver had tragically died on impact, the middle passenger was critically wounded, while the left side passenger was seriously injured.”

Paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the injured, before airlifting the critically wounded man to a specialised Durban facility. The seriously injured man was stabilised and transported to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital.

The highway had to be closed for about an hour while the patients were removed from the scene.

The bakkie ramped about 10 metres up the underside of the bridge and slammed into a concrete support post.
