Residents collar hijacker

The suspect is part of a syndicate with orders to hijack specific vehicles on request.

An alleged hijacker was caught on Friday night, 23 October by residents in Lotus Park.

“The five men attempted to hijack a vehicle in Teal Place, but they were spotted by alert members of the public who pursued them on foot,” said Alpha Alarms communications officer, Krishnee Naidoo.

Four of his accomplices fled into the bushes, while one man was nabbed on Egret Crescent.

Unconfirmed reports allege that the suspect is part of a syndicate with orders to hijack specific vehicles on request. The public is commended for acting swiftly and being vigilant.”

Alpha Alarms responded to the scene, but the fast-acting community members had already apprehended the man.

Response officer, Ricky Michael noticed a possible weapon on the apprehended thief and after searching him, found a handmade gun with a bullet in his possession.

‘While the attempted hijacking was in progress, members of the community policing forum and public were in an anti-crime meeting at Strelitzia Secondary School to address the spiralling crime in the community.

The captured thief was mobbed by members of the community, who were determined to mete out street justice to him for the crime that he attempted to commit.

EMRS paramedics arrived on the scene and stabilised him, before transporting him to hospital, accompanied by police.”
