Traffic alert for South Coast Marathon

Members who are marshaling on Sunday are reminded they must collect their flags and safety vests on Saturday, 17 October from 10am from Martin.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club (AC) reminds road users that the South Coast Marathon takes place on Sunday, 18 October.

The 21km starts in Ilfracombe and the marathon in Scottburgh. The 6am start will see over 2,000 athletes make their way to the finish line at Lords and Legends at Hutchison Park.

Athletes will face oncoming traffic through Warner Beach, past Seadoone Mall and the finish at Hutchison Park.

Metro Police and traffic marshalls from Toti AC will be at all the main intersections. Motorists are requested to be patient. The first runners will come through Warner Beach at about 7am. There will be high traffic volumes at the finish at Hutchison Park until after prize-giving at noon.

Important race information entry tags and race packs can be collected on Saturday morning, 17 October from 10am to 4pm from Lords and Legends and on Sunday morning from the Toti Civic Centre between 3.30am to 5am. Athletes are reminded the train leaves Toti station at 5am to take athletes to the start of the 21km at Ilfracombe station and the 42km at Scottburgh station. Both races will start at 6am and the timing and results will be captured by event timing.

The start of the 42km race has been moved to opposite the Scottburgh train station.

Athletes can look forward to 14 well-stocked refreshment tables with cold water and coke. The water table at the 21km is run by the Nel family and friends who always offer a treat, chocolates, potatoes, biscuits and oranges, which are appreciated by the athletes.

Athletes are requested to throw ACC booster bags and other items in the bins provided after the water table.

The helpers run was well-supported on Saturday.

Twenty two members ran the 21km and 28 the 42km. Special thanks to members who helped transport athletes to the start and members who seconded athletes with water and coke.

Runners started at 4.50am, but by 8am the weather turned hot with a strong south easterly wind making conditions tough for all. Well done to Carol Raasch and Lauren Symands on completing there first 42km, a great achievement on a hot, windy day and tough route, the girls even showing up some of the guys.

The Toti AC committee wishes athletes a great and safe race. There are some international athletes from Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Britain and Zimbabwe. They are wished a pleasant stay in Amanzimtoti.
