THANKS to wonderful community support an ugly eyesore in Warner Beach has been completely transformed, according to Gaylene Allen of My Sapphire CommUnity (MSC).
“It is no longer an intimidating experience to walk through the subway which runs under the railway line at the junction of Kingsway and Hawthorne Roads.”
On Heritage Day, Thursday, 24 September after several weeks of planning and preparation, MSC was delighted to welcome volunteers who arrived to participate in revamping the subway. Beautiful murals were painted by members of two local art clubs – Palette Art Group and Upper South Coast Art Association. Others painted flags of the world along the subway entrance.
“An indigenous garden was established to replace unsightly litter and overgrown vegetation which once lined the approach to the subway. Fences were erected and refuse carted away.
It was a busy day but loads of fun and heartwarming to see young and old from all walks of life, get stuck in to help us. None of this could have happened without generous donations from individuals and local businesses, and we thank each and every one,” said Barrett Neilson, who is in charge of the project.
“The revamp is not quite complete and we’re particularly looking for help to have more flags painted along the subway entrance,” he said.
“It was inspiring to see so many people from our community come together to make a difference,” said Gaylene.
