International Coastal Cleanup Day in the Toti area was a sparkling success, with 780 people collecting over 500 bags of trash and more still to be counted.
“That is a community effort at its best,” said Toti Conservancy’s Angus Pyke. “Schools, clubs and individuals were involved and everyone must be complimented. Amanzimtoti Primary’s grade 4 to 7 pupils need a special mention as 315 pupils collected 114 bags of rubbish from the streets in the surrounding area. The children picked up a total of 4,835 individual items in an hour.”
Toti Conservancy co-ordinated the project on behalf of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. It appeals to everyone to stop littering and to ‘pick it up’ everyday, not just on clean-up day. Coastal Cleanup Day takes place annually on the third Saturday in September.
