Burglar gets 15 years after beating man (91)

KZN police commissioner welcomed the sentence meted out by the court.

A MAN who was arrested two days after he assaulted a 91-year-old Park Rynie resident during a house robbery earlier this year, was convicted and sentenced in the Scottburgh Regional Court on Monday, 28 September.

“During the night of 14 April, two suspects broke a window to gain entry into the house where the man was living with his 53-year-old paraplegic daughter. They demanded computers and money,” said provincial police spokesman, Col Jay Naicker.

Sbusiso Sbu Chiliza (34) was subsequently arrested and put on trial. He appeared in the Scottburgh regional court on 28 September, where he pleaded guilty to a charge of housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery and was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.

KZN police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, welcomed the sentence meted out by the court. “This is a very fitting sentence that will send out a strong message to the criminal world that we will not tolerate these ruthless attacks, especially on our vulnerable women, children and the elderly,” she said.
