Dumped rubbish gets up resident’s nose

Report illegal dumping to 031-311-8804.

A lower Illovo resident complained about the mess subcontractors are making of the suburb’s main road while transporting refuse to the recently-opened dump.

Vic Stringer said private subcontractors collect rubbish and overload their vehicle, causing the rubbish to fall off en route to the dump. “They don’t pick up the rubbish that falls off and it gets strewn all over the main road,” he said. “It’s disgusting.

I’ve spoken to them numerous times, but they say it’s not their problem to pick up what they’ve dropped.”

eThekwini Municipality’s communications head, Tozi Mthethwa said the city was not aware of the matter, as no complaints have been received.

“The matter is being investigated by the relevant municipal unit and if evidence of illegal dumping is found, transgressors will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.

“In our efforts to maintain a clean and sustainable city, we urge residents to report illegal dumping to 031-311-8804.”
