THE community is invited to a fun event with My Sapphire CommUnity (MSC) at the Warner Beach subway on Heritage Day, Thursday, 24 September.
“After much preparation this is the day that the subway will be transformed into a work of art. There will be paint and brushes and MSC members on hand to help those who would like to assist. The theme is ‘The Beach’ and we’ve had great input from artists who have come on board with ideas,” said Barrett Neilson, of Blue Sky Mining Backpackers Lodge, who is driving the project.
“There has been a lot of collaboration and background work in getting this upgrade project off the ground,” said Gaylene Allen of MSC.
“Amanzimtoti Fire Department performed a ‘big wash’ of the subway using their high-pressure hoses to clean from ceiling to floor. MSC is grateful for their help, and thanks Cllr Andre Beetge for co-ordinating this with the fire department.”
In the last few days, community members have rolled up their sleeves. While some filled in holes with fillers, others cleared the alien vegetation and overgrowth or filled bags with litter. Children from Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre in Malvern also helped in the clean-up on Saturday morning, 19 September. This is part of community outreach work that they are encouraged to take part in on a regular basis. St Mary’s Church kindly hosted them for lunch.
“We’ve received generous donations of plants and paint supplies from local businesses and an anonymous donor,” said Gaylene. “So we’re all set to celebrate our beautiful part of the world, and invite everyone to drop by, lend a hand and enjoy the fun.”
MSC members will be at the subway from 8.30am onwards on Heritage Day. There will be a free wors roll (while stocks last) for anyone who volunteers their time.
