Spring into action by donating blood

Celebrate Heritage Month by donating blood.

THE public is urged to support a community blood drive hosted by the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) at the Toti library activities room on Friday, 4 September, from noon to 6pm.

“Our target is 75 units,” said the organisation’s Mohamed Goolam.

Longer and warmer days, a floral fragrance in the air and open windows bringing in the delicious aroma of a braai on the go – for many, these are the impressions of Spring ushered in by September.

It is also the month when South Africans come together to acknowledge the unifying heritage and the many joys of living in a diverse country. As you don your traditional garb to mark Heritage Day on 24 September, the SANBS calls on you to celebrate another thing we have in common – our nation’s blood.

Together, SANBS and its loyal donors aim to collect 3,000 units of life-saving blood each day in order to give life to mothers in labour, accident victims, cancer survivors and thousands of others in need of blood transfusions.

“It is a remarkable notion that this precious fluid that runs through my veins could be exactly what you might need,” said SANBS communications manager Vanessa Raju.

To become a donor, one must be in good health, live a healthy lifestyle, weigh over 50kg, live a sexually safe lifestyle and be between the ages of 16 and 65-years to donate blood.
