Pupils culinary skills on show in cook-off

This is the second time Kingsway High School will feature at the national competition.

TWO passionate cooks and Kingsway High School (KHS) pupils, Dana Erasmus and Sauda Hoosen will show off the skills at the national round of the Pick n Pay cookery competition in September.

KHS is the only school from KZN to feature at the national round in the last two years. In 2014, Mikayla Lazarus and Isabel Smit won prizes for most interesting menu.

Initially, three teams entered the regional round, which sees Pick n Pay in conjunction with sponsors and the Prue Leith Cookery School run the annual competition.

The theme was a high tea and students had to come up with their own, unique ideas.

Grade 11 pupils, Savannah Clinton and Ciara Gangel came up with ‘Oh Baby’ a high tea for a baby shower; Shenay Naude and Shalyne Duartte had a ‘Hello South African Summer’ theme and the winners, Dana and Sauda focused on ‘Granny’s Love’ inspired by favourite dishes from grandmothers.

Dishes presented were a cake, a tart, two sweet treats and two savoury treats. Each team had to submit a portfolio where they had to cook all six dishes, cost, set-up a tea table and photograph.

‘Granny’s Love’ was selected as one of 15 teams from across SA. Along with their teacher, Bev Le Roux, they will be flown to Johannesburg and accommodated in the Leriba Spa Hotel on Wednesday, 2 September. They will compete on Thursday, 3 September, which will be followed by prizegiving the next day.

Many wonderful prizes can be won.

Dana and Sauda are looking forward to the competition. “We practise our dishes after school. We will have hours to cook and 30 minutes to set-up. We both enjoy cooking and work well as a team,” said Dana.
