Free online chat on adult ADHD

Send in your questions which will be answered by experts on Friday, 21 August.

WHEN people think of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) they often think of rowdy children who cannot sit still.

However, research has shown that symptoms of ADHD can linger into adulthood. Over 3% of the South African adult population is likely to have ADHD.

In general, adults with the condition will not have considered ADHD as an explanation for their problems, which may include poor organisational skills, bad time-keeping and lack of attention. There are however many myths and misunderstandings surrounding adult ADHD.

“ADHD can run in families, there is a much higher likelihood that a person with ADHD will have a relative with ADHD too,” said psychiatrist, Dr Frans Korb.

Living with undiagnosed and untreated ADHD can seriously affect your relationships, performance at work and even day-to-day activities. It is important to seek help as soon as possible.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) knows that many people don’t realise how serious the effects of ADHD can be – or where to get help and information.

For this reason, it will host two live one-hour Facebook Friday chats on Friday, 21 August with SA experts on this topic.

Clinical psychologist, Daniel Greenslade will be available at 1pm and Sandton psychiatrist and board member, Dr Frans Korb will be on at 7pm.

Those interested can link to the chat by visiting SADAG’s Facebook page (The South African Depression and Anxiety Group) or directly from the SADAG website www.sadag.org.

If you visit the Facebook page, you can ask questions which will be answered by the experts on the Friday. If you would like to remain anonymous, send a private message via the Facebook Page, or SMS ‘Facebook’ and your question to 31393 or email admin@anxiety.org.za.

If you are unable to join the Facebook Friday chats or feel that you need help more urgently, call the ADHD helpline on 0800-55-44-33 between 8am and 8pm any day of the week.
