Toti WI bids farewell to Marj

The speakers this month was Alan Symons and his grandson Storm.

VICE president and secretary of Amanzimtoti Women’s Institute (WI), Yvonne Dixie welcomed all members at the WI general meeting on 11 August.

It was sad to say goodbye to dearest Marj Archibald.

Her daughters relocated her to Pinetown, as it is nearer for them to see Marj more frequently. Marj joined women’s institute in 1948, and has her 50th year judges badge for handicraft. She taught sewing and knitting to women and teenage girls who met at her home regularly with the help of WI members. Together they knitted squares which Marj sewed into blankets, and donated to the needy. They made 800 blankets. Marj only worked for charities, orphanages and the elderly. She will be missed by so many.

Khanya Hospice thanked Amanzimtoti WI for its donations.

Amanzimtoti WI will be celebrating its 80th birthday on 8 September, and really looks forward to the fun activities.

For the October meeting, members should take along toiletries for the seamen, maybe knitted scarves and beanies. This will be appreciated.

The speakers this month were Alan Symons and his grandson Storm.

Storm is a strong and determined 17-year-old man who is blind and has so much courage to achieve in as many ways as possible. Storm had verbal help from a computer, through which he was able to pass his matric exams. Storm has worked on a switchboard at the police station and at a recruiting firm, and recently passed his Braille exam with 87%. Alan Symon spoke on anger management and stress, giving an informative talk. To quote his motto: “Whoever angers you owns you”. We have to be alert at all times to try and avoid doing and saying things that stress and anger others. Alan told members a few funny stories which everyone enjoyed.
