Ironman SMSes to aid Bobbi Bear

THE Ironman 4 the Kidz Charity Trust has nominated two children’s charities which will benefit from the first Ironman 70.3 event on Sunday, 2 August in Durban – Bobbi Bear and the Daily News Milk Fund.

The Ironman 70.3 consists of a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and a 21km run. The event has captured the imagination of the Durban sporting public and was sold out a month before.

A small number of competitors will be taking part in the ‘Team Orange’ challenge in an effort to raise funds for the two nominated charities.

The aim of the Ironman 4 the Kidz Charity Trust is to reach the target of 11,000 SMS donations.

Bobbi Bear was founded in July 2000, and registered as NPO on 29 October, 2001.

Its mission is “to rescue, represent and reintegrate raped and sexually-abused children, to minimise their risk of HIV/AIDS, and to help them towards wholeness.”

The organisation’s objectives are:

* To collaborate with and assist the criminal justice system to ensure the rights and safety of the child victims of sexual abuse.

* To assess HIV/AIDS risk of child victims of sexual abuse at point-of-rescue, to intervene and to counsel appropriately.

* Applying counselling methods with use of Bobbi Bear, to obtain forensic evidence to assist the criminal justice process, within the best interests of the child.

* To empower and train local communities to collaborate with the criminal justice system, to ensure the rights and safety of the child (preventative measures).

* To empower and train child safety officers locally, as prototypes for national expansion.

* To equip and mobilise churches and communities to be trained in HIV/AIDS, pre-and post-test counselling and positive living/wellness management programmes, in order to offer spiritual and emotional support to child victims of sexual abuse

* To increase awareness within local communities, with the aid of Bobbi Bear as a symbol against sexual abuse and HIV/AIDS.
