‘Expired’ licence fine irks pensioner

Fine issued in spite of licence only expiring at the end of the week.

A TOTI resident is livid after a Metro Police officer issued a fine for her ‘expired’ vehicle licence disc, which in fact has not expired.

Jean du Plessis (75) received the nasty surprise on returning to her car, after having lunch with her son Enrico at Spur on Toti main beach on Tuesday, 28 July.

The licence disc only expires on Friday, 31 July, but the over-zealous Metro officer nonetheless issued an R800 fine.

On the fine, date and time of offence is clearly written as 28 July, at 10.50am and date of expiry of the licence as 31 July.

“I am so angry,” said Jean.

She went to the Metro offices at Winklespruit for assistance, but they were unable to help. She now has to go to the offices in Isipingo.
“I am so angry at this situation. Now, I have to spend time sorting this mess out, which I could have spent a lot better. I can’t go to Isipingo by myself, I have to get my son involved and it’s his time too.”

Time is valuable to me, I am unable to do the charity work I am involved in.”
Jean also questioned how many other motorists suffered a similar fate on the day.

“How well are these officers trained? If they were properly trained they would have clearly spotted the difference in dates.”

The Sun has sent a query to Metro Police communications regarding this issue and is awaiting a response.
