Mandela Day brings joy to 200 children

They received school bags and treats.

CHILDREN from three projects in the semi-rural area of Nsimbini, which is in partnership with A Centre That Serves (ACTS), a Toti NGO, were given treats on Mandela Day.

Igugu Labantu received 120 packets of sweets by Initiative Media staff in Southgate Business Park. The sweets were handed out to the children from the community, mostly orphans, and they were overjoyed to be part of celebrating Mandela Day. A Zulu dancer entertained the children and told them briefly about Mandela’s life and how much he loved children.

Khanya Langa and the Nsimbini Information Centre pre-schools received 85 school bags for the children attending. They were donated by brand ambassador of BB Durban Bakery, Claudine Alexander.

The school bags were filled with crayons, paint, colouring-in books, a lunch tin, water bottle, facecloth, ruler, pencil and pencil case.

Each child was given a sweet with a happy birthday Mandela tag pinned to it. They were also given a loaf of bread and muffins to take home to share with their families.

“We are grateful to Marian Immerman for introducing BB Durban Bakery to ACTS. Over 200 children who don’t have much were overjoyed by what they received. The joy on their faces brought some of the adults close to tears,” said the organisation’s Carol van Zyl.

ACTS thanks everyone who has enabled them to bring joy and uplift the projects in Nsimbini. For more information, contact Felix on 083-285-9192 or Carol on 072-892-4513.
