Questions over retarring of Kingsway

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of July.

The Toti public has queried why the R102 (Kingsway) between Joyner Road and Leslie Road is being resurfaced again, following the re-tarring of it earlier in the year.

Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge said it is par for the course and there’s no reason to panic.

“Taken into consideration the type and traffic volume that the road is set to accommodate, preparation and completion is totally different than a normal suburban street,” he said.

According to the councillor, resurfacing such a road starts with sand, followed by a stone or foreign matter layer that is compacted into a 460mm layer. On top of this follows a 250mm reconditioned, stabilised layer with a 40mm asphalt wearing surface.

“The wearing surface is covered with the final, ultra-thin functional layer that is set to reduce friction, road noise, water build-up and associated water spray, which in turn contributes to enhance road safety,” said Cllr Beetge.

“The final layer is about 74% complete with delays caused by product from the refractory and exceptional cold conditions given that it is a hot application and sensitive to cold and wet conditions.”

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of July, at which time it will be inspected by the roads provision department. The motoring public is urged to use caution along Kingsway during the resurfacing.
