Police detectives must use skills effectively

Message was reiterated by provincial police commissioner at a conference at the Toti Civic Centre.

PROVINCIAL police commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni met with cluster commanders, station commanders and detective branch commanders of KZN at Amanzimtoti Civic Centre on Tuesday, 14 July.

“At the meeting she urged detectives to put more effort into their investigations to ensure increased detection, conviction rates and most importantly, to ensure feedback is given to complainants on cases investigated.

The conference was aimed at strategically sharing ideas and best practises that will assist the detectives in improving their performance with regards to investigations and thereby improving on service delivery to all communities,” said provincial police spokesman, Maj Thulani Zwane.

Lt Gen Ngobeni reminded the detectives of their obligations in terms of Batho Pele principles and the police code of conduct. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) chief prosecutors were on hand to give guidelines to detectives on how they can work together in improving the conviction rate. Detectives were encouraged to improve overall performance. The delegates shared good practises and committed to put more efforts on matters of service delivery.

“Detectives must utilise their skills professionally and effectively within the framework of the law. They play an important role in ensuring that criminals stay behind bars for as long as possible and we are committed to empowering our detectives with the necessary tools to do the job,” said Ngobeni.
