Resident exchanges gunfire with burglars

Jackson advised residents not to confront intruders.

An Athlone Park resident had a lucky escape after a shootout with a gang of alleged armed robbers in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 14 July.

Blue Security operations manager, Brian Jackson said two armed men gained entry to the Ngobeni Drive property at around 3.05am.

“The men then tried to break into the home, but were disturbed when the resident went outside to investigate and spotted them,” he said.

“The robbers fired several shots at the resident, who then returned fire. The robbers fled the scene. Fortunately there are no injuries reported.”

Amanzimtoti SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

Jackson advised residents not to confront intruders on their properties or to go outside to investigate if they hear suspicious noises, as intruders were often armed and dangerous.

“We advise residents to rather take the family and lock themselves in a ‘safe room’ in the home, that has been pre-equipped with a spare cellphone and remote panic button, and to call their private security company and police for help from there,” he said.

Jackson advised residents to use a spare room or a bathroom as a ‘safe room’, rather than the main bedroom, as crime trends reveal that criminals have a perception there may be valuables to be found in the main bedroom.
