Parents need help with burn victim’s play therapy costs

A fundraiser for Toti’s little burn victim is planned for the end of September.

Two-year-old Willow Malan was scalded with hot water in April after she pulled at the cord of a kettle and the scalding water fell over the right side of her face and body.

She sustained first, second and third degree burns – her face, ear and arm being the worst affected.

Burn victims wear pressure garments while their scars heal. Garments are worn as long as possible and Willow has to keep hers on for up to 13 hours a day for more than a year.

She has had a tough road to recovery in the first three months and still has a long way to go. “The worst was her ear and keloids have formed there already,” said her mother, Lorna. “It is a big concern to us. Her wounds looked very bad in the beginning, but they look much better now.”

Diane Thomas of Equity Medical Technologies heard of Willow’s story and came forward with a donation of burn dressings. Unfortunately, they could not be used as Willow’s wounds have closed.

“Willow initially got over her ordeal very quickly, but wearing the garment takes her back to her accident and she feels she is being punished when she has to wear it,” said Lorna.

The Illovo Beach toddler saw a psychologist this week to help her cope. “The psychologist said Willow suffers from post trumatic stress disorder and she needs filial play therapy.”

Chris Harmon donated a basset hound puppy that will help with her play therapy, as will leasing a horse at a local ranch in Amanzimtoti. She will ride, groom and love the pony as her own every Sunday, but her parents need financial help with this.

“For her fundraiser we want to have a children’s fun day with possibly face-painting, a cake sale and inflatables for the children to enjoy,” said Lorna.

A suitable venue is also required, as are vendors who cater for children and don’t mind offering the family a percentage of their turnover to help with Willow’s medical bills.

If you can help assist the family with the fundraiser, including organising it, contact Lorna or Jan on 061-312-9613 or email lornamalan91@gmail.com.
