No performances during Bat Centre repairs

The initial work over the next four months is urgent

RENOVATIONS of the Bat Centre were started by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) last week, with much-needed repairs underway, meaning some disruptions to programmes over the next four months.

The arts and cultural centre in the Durban Port, which is owned by the TNPA, will undergo civil and structural work, including roof, wall and staircase repairs and the upgrade of fire and electrical systems.

“During an assessment, which we carried out last year, it was decided to revamp the entire Bat Centre. However, the initial work over the next four months is urgent and essential remedial work that will see minor disruptions to some of the Bat Centre’s service offerings, while we work to ensure the continued safety of the building,” said port manager, Moshe Motlohi.

These preliminary repairs to the restaurant, reception area, offices, Sipho Gumede hall, visual art studio and Menzi Mchunu gallery should end in November. Some events have been cancelled or postponed and during the repairs, there will be no performances.

“Despite the expected disruption and temporary inconvenience we believe it will be worth it to ensure we can continue to promote and support the local arts sector in the future. We are depending on our loyal patrons and tenants to bear with us during this period and will endeavour to keep them updated throughout the progress of the operations,” said Bat Centre publicity co-ordinator, Alvin Anderson.
