Domestic violence message shared with youth

The intention was to impart relevant knowledge to youth, to take back to their communities.

KINGSBURGH Child and Family Welfare Society hosted a programme on domestic violence and gender sensitivity for youth, which was made possible via funding from AECI on Tuesday, 7 July.

“The programme is designed to raise awareness about domestic violence and victim empowerment among service providers and communities. This time round we targeted the youth and about 20 of them from Toti, Illovo and KwaMakhutha attended,” said senior social worker, Sandra Govender.

The programme aimed to provide information about the causes of domestic violence; sensitise communities to gender issues and problems and difficulties experienced by women and men who have been abused; encourage communities to work together to take action and develop understanding and empathy for women and men who have been abused.

“Our focus is to impart knowledge to youth, who will go back to their communities to assist people who are experiencing violence and abuse in the home.”

Sandra described the group as interactive and eager to learn.

Njabulo Mthembu who attended the course, said it has motivated him to help others. “About 50% of my friends are in family situations where there is domestic violence. With the knowledge I have gained, I will now be able to advise them about the options available to them,” he said.
