MEC calls for caution to road users ahead of Durban July

Tens of thousands of visitors attend the event.

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu has called for extra caution to all visitors who will be coming to the annual Durban July horse-racing and fashion spectacle this weekend.

Tens of thousands of visitors attend the event from within KZN and other provinces with the majority using the busy N2 and N3 routes to Durban.

The integrated law enforcement team involving the department’s Road Traffic Inspectorate, eThekwini Metro Police and SAPS will be on hand to deal with errant road traffic behaviour.

Last year well more than 27,000 vehicles passed through the national toll plazas –and about the same are expected this year.

“I would like to welcome the visitors and other travellers who will be in Durban this weekend. Furthermore, I wish to emphasise that all road users, including motorists, bikers, cyclists and pedestrians should exercise caution and strictly respect road traffic rules to ensure that we prevent accidents,” said Mchunu.
