Man burnt in freak house fire

The electricity should have been isolated.

A man sustained serious burns to his arm and neck after a freak fire broke out in a Gus Brown Road residence on Thursday morning, 2 July.

According to Toti Fire Department divisional commander, Anton Swardling, the man, who works for a pest control company, was spraying chemicals in the house’s roof at about 9am when an explosion took place.

“They thought the electricity had been cut off, which it wasn’t and the flammable chemicals he was using ignited when it came into contact with the electricity. The electricity should have been isolated,” he said.

The house’s geyser also exploded and the house sustained water damage, along with fire damage to the ceiling, where the fire was contained.

The fire department was alerted to the fire by someone who drove to its premises.

The injured man was treated on scene by ER24 paramedics and transported to hospital.
