South not at threat of water restriction yet

But, residents are urged to conserve water.

RESIDENTS living in the south of eThekwini, including Amanzimtoti can breathe a little easier as water rationing has not yet been implemented here by the municipality, unlike areas in the north of Durban.

Nonetheless, all residents are cautioned to be frugal with their water consumption.

“As KwaZulu-Natal continues to struggle with prolonged drought conditions owing to the below average annual rainfall this year, eThekwini Municipality has begun implementing water rationing measures to manage the situation. Water rationing means that water production will be reduced and less water will be supplied.

The water level at Hazelmere Dam, which supplies some parts of the north coast, is currently at 30% and is decreasing at a constant rate of 1% every four days,” said head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa.
“Water is a precious resource and we all have a responsibility to ensure that we report vandalism of water infrastructure and take ownership of the water supply and abuse in our communities.
The reality is that the province is facing a dire water shortage crisis and the only alternative is for people to heed government’s call and conserve water. All due care will be taken to ensure that hospitals and other national key points are not negatively affected as government implements measures to curb excessive water usage.

Domestic water use is being controlled through water rationing and government strongly appeals for the co-operation of the residents and businesses in the affected areas.
For the upcoming June school holidays, we urge customers to drastically reduce their water consumption.”

To save water, consumers should:

  • Avoid washing cars.
  • Avoid filling swimming pools.
  • Avoid filling water in the bath tubs, rather use a shower instead.
  • Avoid watering gardens with a hose pipe. Rather use a watering-can if you have to or collect rainwater for that use.
  • Avoid washing pavings and roofs.
  • Reduce the unnecessary flushing of toilets.

The municipality urges residents to continue reporting water leaks, illegal water connections, vandalism or theft of municipal infrastructure to 080-1313-013, email: eservices@durban.gov.za, SMS to 43554 or fax 031-311-8220.
