Dance showcase moves to the Playhouse

Festival will focus on a variety of dance from diverse cultures.

THE annual Durban Dance Movement Festival returns with its third instalment of showcasing and celebrating the best of dance in KZN at the Playhouse Drama Theatre on Saturday, 27 June.

In collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture, the festival promises to be bigger and better by showcasing diverse cultures through African contemporary, hip hop, break dancing, kwaito, traditional Zulu and Indian dance, ballet and many other styles for a wide variety of audiences to enjoy.

There will be over 150 dancers from around the province, from groups and studios such as Dance Movement, Minette De Klerk Academy, Footworx Dance Studio, Young Star Productions, Stage Burners and many more.

“I’m so excited about this festival because not only do we have more groups to participate, but we also have the opportunity to showcase our works on a bigger and professional stage at the Playhouse Drama Theatre,” said artistic director Jarryd Watson.

There will be two shows, one at 3pm to showcase all the junior and senior level performances from youth aged five to 18-years-old. The 7.30pm show will showcase professional groups of KZN Dance Academy, Kwamashu Theatre Dance, Blue Fire Productions, Dance Movement and new break dance sensation group, Lil’ Raskals.

“I love what this festival represents and we have the privilege of exposing dancers from beginners to professionals. This is the very essence of social cohesion, development, growth and sustainability in the arts and culture sector. However, as art practitioners we still find ourselves struggling to produce such festivals because of the lack of funding and support. This makes it difficult for development to continue,” said Watson.

Nonetheless the show must go on. With just two explosive shows at 3pm and 7.30pm, get your tickets at Computicket and call 082-683-9665 for more information.
